Boring to Beautiful

I am so thankful the majority of my clients are such wonderful people.  It makes the drudgery of transporting paints and materials in and out of vehicles and houses all day long must more bearable!  I have been working on various projects in this home for the past seven years.   As you can see, it has beautiful “bones” — a large grand foyer with beautiful moldings and stunning spiral staircase.  But the barren walls did the space absolutely no justice.

The first phase of the project was the hallway.  To create the perfect tone for the walls, I used glazes of yellow ochre, raw sienna and earth brown to create the Tuscan look the client sought.  This was such a timely project for me, because our family was leaving for Italy right after I finished this job.  So I was happy to bring a bit of Italy to Long Island.  Because of the configuration of space, a scaffold wasn’t much help when I needed to get to the very top of the two-story foyer.  My client’s retired dad was more than happy to assist me in moving a large extension ladder around the space.  It wasn’t much fun standing on the aluminum wrungs as I felt the ladder shake underneath me!

I was recently called back to breathe some life into the upstairs hallway walls.   After looking through tons of samples I had brought, my client immediately knew what she wanted when she was my shimmered stripe sample.  Don’t you think she made a great choice?  It’s more dramatic than the foyer finish, but because it is up on the second floor, the space can handle it.  It ties in beautifully with the surroundings, and even enhances the foyer walls.  I love this client’s impeccable taste!  Stay tuned for more rooms …
